You live in Bucks County. When friends and family visit, you take them to Doylestown for the day. You stroll through the lovely little stores … there’s a gallery featuring local artists, a funky kid clothing store, a unique garden and housewares shop, and even a new place with stuff for your dog! As you exit each store you graciously turn to the person behind the counter and say, “We love this place – it’s so cute! Best of luck!”
And you don’t buy a thing.
Fast forward six months. You’re entertaining guests for the weekend and you head back to Doylestown. But where’s that clothing shop? And the cute little place with the pottery in the window? What’s with all of the “For Rent” signs? The charming downtown you loved has turned into a ghost town.
Small town Main Street is in peril. The independent shops can only thrive – and in this economy many would be happy just to survive - if you spend dollars in them. Browsing through and complimenting us on our stores makes us glow with pride, but opening your wallet will keep the lights glowing.
Life on the Leash has only been open for about 5 months, and in that time I’ve seen 4 stores close. One was right next door, and the latest casualty is across the street. Knock wood, LOTL is doing okay, but it’s scary (and sad) watching formerly vibrant businesses closing up.
So what can you do? Buy local. Support the town you love by investing in it. Doylestown is a unique place where a Main Street still exists. (The merchants try to ignore the many Gap bags walking down the street.) It’s a town filled with passionate, knowledgeable store owners who remember your name and are happy to help you. Buying local keeps tax dollars where they belong; working for you in your community. For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures.
I’m doing my best to spread the “buy local” message … my chalkboard out front is attracting some attention:

And people can’t miss the giant chalkboard behind my counter:

Folks, your dollars count. When you buy local everyone benefits. Support the stores you love!
