Lessons in Lighting

If you visit this blog frequently (which I hope you do!) you already know that I like taking pictures of dogs. I’m fortunate to have a camera that enables me to look like a better photographer than I actually am. The fact is, I still have tons more to learn. Lighting, for examples, vexes me.

Let’s look at a case study, shall we? My new client Pepper the 5-month old cockapoo presented me with the dreaded “dark dog challenge”:

There’s a dog in all of that blackness? Indeed there is … a very clever, sweet, adorable dog in fact.

Pepper was a patient model as I moved around the room, trying to find some light that would do her justice. Getting closer:

Love that expression:

A sliver of light! Can I coax her into it, at just the right angle?

The light is decent but she looks sheepish …

Ah, there she is! Looking like a proud puppy who just aced her first lesson!

Oh, she is adorable! I have the same problem with my puppy, he’s all black except a little white on his chest and toes; and my camera doesn’t work well with indoor lighting…
