Tom and I took a little trip up North and stopped in Portland Maine for a weekend.

Portland was not happy to see us. It rained nonstop.

I asked our cab driver if Portland is dog friendly. His reply? “Oh, wicked.”

They really say “wicked”- nice! We discovered Portland’s love of dogs firsthand when we hit downtown and found three fantastic dog supply stores within blocks of each other.

Planet Dog’s headquarters are in Portland, as is a big company store. (Crappy camera alert.)

I had visions of $4 “less than perfect” Orbee toys, but no such luck. No seconds, no “last season’s merch,” just lots of very cool regularly-priced stuff. I left empty-handed.

We braved the elements and stopped by a few beaches. I was happy to see this dog-friendly sign at the first one:

Way better than “No dogs allowed,” right?

We met two very wet, very happy chocolate labs:

They were off leash and had the run of the beach (the hell with rules!).

Portland charmed us, bad weather and all. It was lovely to get away …

LOVE the photo of the human shoe prints with the dog prints alongside. That would be the perfect picture to accompany that “heaven” story or any universally sobby dog quote, like on a poster. Hm…. KA CHING!! Let’s do it; we’d make a fortune hee :) Can you tell my book has no takers yet? DAMMIT! It’s David Sedaris meets “Marley and Me” except about a German Shepherd, not a Lab. Anyone? Anyone? No? Ok. Haha
