Eye Wide Shut

Sum’s left eye was looking pretty awful when we picked him up after vacation. Red, squinty, swollen, goopy – the works. We dealt with eye issues last summer (and I still shudder when I think of the tally), so his latest round of ocular drama came as no surprise.
Off to the veterinary ophthalmologist we went. Yes, they exist.
Though Sum is a dog with “issues,” (keep reading, you’ll hear all about them) he’s a total pro at the vet.
“You’d like to stick what up my bum? Sure, ok, just make it quick.”
His calm acceptance of the necessary probing made me very proud. What a good boy!
Turns out he has another indolent ulcer, but this time it’s in the other eye. Hooray – a two-fer!
They took him to the back to debride the surface of his eye (I imagine it’s not a fun experience for him, and it’s best that his poor, pushover Mommy not see him in pain). While I waited for him in the lobby I met this sweet fellow:
I wasn’t too proud to ask his person what he was (I’m a dog trainer – shouldn’t I recognize every single breed on the planet?) … I’m glad I asked. Chance the Wonderdog is an AussieDoodle, a cross between an Australian shepherd and a poodle! He had traffic-stopping coloring, and a really sweet temperament.
Sum finally came out, frantic and panting, wearing his least favorite accessory:
An Elizabethan collar – the horror! The poor guy can’t seem to figure out the circumference of the thing, so he constantly runs into door jams and freaks himself out. It’s sad and pathetic. Last time we went through this I let him have collar furlough, but he managed to rub the protective contact lens out of his eye. (Yes, my dog is wearing a contact lens.)
This time, no more Mrs. Nice Guy. Sorry, Sum, but you’re wearing it for the next 10 days.
Unless it’s really hot.
And you look miserable.
And I can keep an eye on you the whole time it’s off.
And you promise not to rub.
Or not.
